LSID Deployment in the Catalogue of Life

چکیده
In this paper we describe a GBIF/TDWG-funded project in which LSIDs have been deployed in the Catalogue of Life’s Annual and Dynamic Checklist products as a means of identifying species and higher taxa in these large species catalogues. We look at the technical infrastructure requirements and topology for the LSID resolution process and characteristics of the RDF (Resource Description Framework) metadata returned by the resolver. Such characteristics include the use of concepts and relationships taken from the TDWG (Taxonomic Database Working Group) ontology and how a given taxon LSID relates to others including those issued by database providers and those above and below it in the taxonomic tree. Finally we evaluate the project and LSID usage in general. We also look to the future when the CoL LSID infrastructure will have to deal changing taxonomic information, annually in the case of the Annual Checklist and possibly much more frequently in the case of the Dynamic Checklist.

Identifying and relating biological concepts in the Catalogue of Life
BACKGROUND In this paper we describe our experience of adding globally unique identifiers to the Species 2000 and ITIS Catalogue of Life, an on-line index of organisms which is intended, ultimately, to cover all the world's known species. The scientific species names held in the Catalogue are names that already play an extensive role as terms in the organisation of information about living orga...
متن کاملGlobally distributed object identification for biological knowledgebases
The World-Wide Web provides a globally distributed communication framework that is essential for almost all scientific collaboration, including bioinformatics. However, several limits and inadequacies have become apparent, one of which is the inability to programmatically identify locally named objects that may be widely distributed over the network. This shortcoming limits our ability to integ...
متن کاملSchema driven assignment and implementation of life science identifiers (LSIDs)
Life science identifier (LSID) is a global unique identifier standard intended to help rationalize the unique archival requirements of biological data. We describe LSID implementation architecture such that data managed by a relational database management system may be integrated with the LSID protocol as an add-on layer. The approach requires a database administrator (DBA) to specify an export...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Management Information System Deployment with Conflict Management Styles in Educational and Executive Sports Managers (Case Study: Tehran municipality)
Organizational conflict is a fundamental and pervasive part of our organizational life. Organizations generally fail in competitive environments if there is less conflict. Managers can use Conflict to increase the effectiveness of the organization. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between management information system (MIS) deployment with conflict management styl...
